Het dieet beperkt of elimineert de consumptie van koolhydraten, vezels en plantaardig voedsel volledig. Het idee achter het dieet is dat het lichaam beter geschikt is om vlees en dierlijke producten te verteren en te gebruiken als brandstof in plaats van koolhydraten. Het dieet is echter zeer controversieel vanwege de mogelijke negatieve gevolgen op lange termijn, zoals een gebrek aan vezels en nutri\u00ebnten uit planten.
